Not just nice

Ensuring that a website is accessible to all is important for several reasons.
Not just because it's nice.

It's about giving all people, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities, access to the same information and opportunities on the internet. Another clear benefit is that the more people who can access and use the website, the more traffic and increased visibility on the internet. Google likes accessible sites too.

Inclusive

An accessible website contributes to a more inclusive and equitable society. By making the web accessible to people with disabilities, we can reduce the digital divide and give everyone the same opportunity to use and benefit from it.

  • Increased equality
  • Progressive web presence

Legal Requirements

In Europe, there are laws and guidelines that establish requirements for web accessibility, such as the Web Accessibility Directive and WCAG 2.1, which require certain websites and apps to be accessible for people with disabilities.

  • Consistent with laws and guidelines
  • Future-proof website

Conversion and SEO

Having an accessible website is also good for conversion. By making it accessible for people with disabilities, you can increase the number of potential customers or users, increase traffic, and therefore improve your ranking on Google.

Common Deficiencies

Accessibility involves both design and code, here are some common deficiencies to keep in mind.

Contrast Ratios

Sufficient contrast between text color and background color helps distinguish the text from the background, reducing eye fatigue and enabling faster reading. For users with visual impairments, sufficient contrast may be crucial for them to be able to read the text at all. According to WCAG 2.1 AA level, the text needs to have a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1, or 3:1 for large text.

Page structure

Clear and logical heading levels help create a hierarchy of information and make it easier for users to find relevant information. Additionally, it makes the page more accessible to people with disabilities, as the headings can be read aloud by screen readers and used to jump between sections. Structured heading levels are also an important factor for search engines to correctly index and rank the page.

What does the web look like if you are color blind?

People with color blindness have difficulty distinguishing between certain colors, making it harder for them to read text, interpret diagrams, or navigate a website. They may also have difficulty perceiving color-dependent information, such as link colors or status icons. It is therefore important to design web pages with sufficient contrast and avoid color-dependent information.
